Spay and Neuter Assistance

In hundreds of animal shelters throughout the United States, millions of healthy cats and dogs are euthanized each year because there are not enough people who want them. The cause of this widespread pet over-population is unaltered pets. Some people don't know this, or they don't recognize this is related to their own animals. The way to solve the problem is to prevent unwanted animals from being born.

Low-cost Spay/Neuter Certificate Program

At Northeast Animal Shelter, our goal is to make sure every animal we place is spayed or neutered. We send our unaltered pets to a local veterinarian whenever possible, but sometimes an animal is adopted before it can be altered. This might occur when a puppy or kitten is too young for the procedure or, if an older pet, it might be adopted soon after its arrival. In these cases, we provide a Spay/Neuter Certificate to the adopter. This certificate can be redeemed for a low-cost spay/neuter procedure at dozens of local veterinarian clinics who participate in our program.

Mother Spay Program

The Mother Spay Program was created after many years and many boxes of baby kittens being brought to the Shelter. Something needed to be done to break the never-ending cycle of unwanted animals!

So we started the Mother Spay Program. When people brought litters to us, we started providing certificates for the mother cats to be spayed, at the Shelter's expense. This way, families are able to keep their mother cats.

Now we don't see the same people over and over again with their litters of kittens. While there are still many kittens being born, the population is steadily decreasing.

Even though the program was designed for mother cats AND dogs, we have found that these days, very few dogs in our area are unspayed and their owners rarely need help from this program. Someday, we hope to say the same for the cat population!

Stray Cat Medical Program

To promote the spaying and neutering of stray cats in our community, we created the Stray Cat Medical Program. This program is a community effort involving concerned citizens and veterinarians.

We provide the necessary education and follow-up advice for the rescuer. We are able to take some of them into our shelter and find them permanent homes.

Medical Intervention Program

Sometimes pet owners surrender their dog or cat to us and the pet needs medical care, and without this care the pet is not easily adoptable. For a pet to be considered adoptable, it needs to be up-to-date on its vaccines, have a blood test, be spayed/neutered (if old enough), and have a recent checkup by a veterinarian to make sure its heart and lungs are healthy. Through our Medical Intervention Program, surrendered pets receive their vaccines, blood work, a visit to the veterinarian, and a spay/neuter procedure if appropriate. If the pet has other health issues such as needing dental care, further surgery to correct health issues, or testing such as ultrasounds or echocardiograms, it can receive that care thanks to this program. Unfortunately, funds for our Medical Intervention Program are limited, so each pet taken in and helped through this program is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Low Cost Public Spay/Neuter Assistance

Northeast Animal Shelter is not able to offer low-cost certificates for spay or neuter to the general public. Please see the link below for local resources to help you get your pet spayed or neutered at a reduced rate.
