Unfortunately, many animals that find their way to Northeast Animal Shelter often have unbelievable stories leading up to their rescue. But thanks to loving adoptive families, these stories have wonderful endings.

This is just one of the many stories...

Broken Hero

He was old, with a back injury that had never healed properly. He wasn’t housebroken. And, he didn’t have classic ‘good looks’.

Broken Hero got his name when he wandered to the door of a veterinarian’s office in West Virginia...obviously long after being hit by a car. His broken pelvis and other injuries had healed to a degree, but rendered him ‘crooked’ and ‘unfixable’.

At first glance, Broken Hero didn’t seem to have much to offer. Until you had the pleasure of meeting him, that is!

The vet kept this precious pooch in a cage to serve out his days as a blood donor -- a ‘hero’ saving the lives of other dogs. When even that became too taxing, the vet planned to put him to sleep…there seemed to be no other option.

Until, of course, Northeast Animal Shelter heard about this Hero.

“Send him,” we said, “He’s our hero, too! We’ll gladly take him in.”

That, of course, is what we do at Northeast Animal Shelter...we take in the animals that no one else is willing to love. We provide any necessary medical care. We work with our animals -- so many of whom have been abused and abandoned -- to get them to trust. We show them that the world can be a kind and caring place.

We also find our animals forever homes with adoptive families who will treasure them always. Adoption is about finding joy where there was not enough...happiness where there was fear and uncertainty...LOVE where there was misery.

Broken Hero found all those things...JOY, HAPPINESS, LOVE -- only one week after arriving at the Shelter. One day a woman came in looking for a dog. After spending just a few minutes with Broken Hero, she fell "head over heels" for him! He, in turn, crawled up into her lap. It was a match made in heaven.

Today, Broken Hero is still happy, safe and adored. Please give this same security to our other animals. They are trusting that friends like you care enough to help! Please give generously.
