Northeast Animal Shelter is an exciting and rewarding place to volunteer and work.

Temporary position to cover a Leave of Absence. Three days a week for three months (December, January and February).

Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) is one of New England’s largest no-kill shelters for cats and dogs.  Since 1976, NEAS has saved the lives of over 133,000 animals. We are located in Salem, MA, just 13 miles north of Boston.  Our facility is a modern 18,000 sq ft building capable of housing over 200 animals in 26 rooms. NEAS typically has 60-70 employees and 200+ volunteers.

NEAS is seeking a dedicated, caring and compassionate veterinarian to join our team. If you have excellent technical, diagnostic, clinical, and surgical skills, as well as a natural ability to relate to our patients and staff, we want to hear from you. Currently, we are looking for a per diem veterinarian to fill some weekday and an occasional weekend day shift.

If you are interested in working directly with rescued pets from across the US then a position at Northeast Animal Shelter is perfect for you.. Tasks involve assisting our veterinarian with surgeries and taking care of medical needs including medicating, vaccines, blood draws and more, along with record keeping, handling dogs and cats, and working with our veterinarians. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Prior Vet Tech experience in a high volume clinic and surgery experience required. Must be skilled in multi-tasking and have the ability to work independently. Shifts will vary and yet to be determined.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

P/T drivers needed to pick up and deliver rescued dogs and cats from the southeast (e.g., Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama) to Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA once or twice a month. Pay commensurate with distance.

Northeast Animal Shelter has been saving homeless animals from euthanasia since 1976. Rescued animals are transported in our own Ford Transit 2500 Cargo Van that is specially outfitted for climate-controlled animal transport. Trips are between 1,000 and 1,400 each way. From pickup to drop off, it will take between 18 & 22 hours. Round trip will take three days.

Typically, you and a co-driver will start from Salem, MA with an empty vehicle, drive half-way and stay overnight, and complete the drive to the pickup point on day two, where you will again stay overnight before picking up 20 to 40 animals. Once the animals are on board, you will drive non-stop, except for fuel and watering breaks for the animals, to the final destination in Salem, MA. After the animals are delivered, you will be expected to sanitize the van and cages with a pressure washer.

You must be able to work independently and adhere to the schedule. All expenses are paid. Long distance night driving experience and previous paid overnight shift work is especially helpful. Driving overnight “once or twice to Texas, Florida, etc.” is not the same as transporting live animals.

This is an ideal job for a retiree. You must have dependable transportation from your home to Salem, MA. You must be reliable and prompt. You must have an excellent driving record – no speeding or reckless driving tickets, and no at-fault accidents in the past five years. You must live within a 90-minute drive of Salem, MA.

If you truly love saving animals and really want to do something towards helping them find their “forever homes,” then, this is the job for you!

Job Type: Contract

Pay: Up to $750.00 per round trip

  • driving overnight: 2 years (Required)

  • “clean” driver’s license (Required)
  • CDL Class A or B (Preferred)
